Wildlife

Natural gardens cascade the hills and border the paths around the property. Large pines and succulents play upon the wild tapestries.

The Santa Lucia Mountains are home to many special species of animals. Peregrine Falcons frequent the grounds of the Barefoot Blackbird, along with owls, scrub jays, woodpeckers, and on occasion the beautiful but endangered California Condor. In the evenings you can hear the coyotes' call, and spot a bobcat slipping away to hide.

THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA

 Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley in California is a sublime pastoral river valley nestled into the towering Santa Lucia range, and is one of the finest wine growing regions in California. The main artery is Carmel Valley Road, which starts at Scenic Highway 1 and meanders eastward, winding along Carmel River past endless opportunities for recreation, entertainment, sumptuous food and premier wine tasting.

Garland Ranch Regional Park is over 4000 acres offering beautiful hiking trails, biking, and horseback riding along the willow-lined banks of the Carmel River.

Big Sur

Big Sur is more a state of mind than a place to pinpoint on a map, and when the sun goes down, the moon and the stars become nature's streetlights. (That's if summer’s fog hasn’t extinguished them). Raw beauty and an intense maritime energy characterize this land shoehorned between the Santa Lucia Range and the Pacific Ocean, and a first glimpse of the craggy, unspoiled coastline is a special moment.

Big Sur became a retreat for artists and writers, including Henry Miller and Beat Generation visionaries such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small beach city on California's Monterey Peninsula. It is known for the museums and library of the historic Carmel Mission, and the fairytale cottages and galleries of the village-like center. The Scenic Bluff Path runs from surf spot Carmel Beach to bird-rich Carmel River State Beach, with a scuba entry point. South lie the sea animals and whaling museum of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
